Going Bulletproof

I have been spreading the words Bulletproof Coffee (BPC) ever since my lips first touched the rich and delicious brew.  It was only a few short years ago that my taste buds were soaked with this tantalizing concoction, yet I can hardly remember drinking coffee without it being Bulletproof. Although it is not for everyone, it is quite delectable, and also brandishes some healthy benefits.

Coffee is one of the world’s oldest and most widely used nootropics (brain enhancing smart drug). The first reported use of caffeine as a “natural restorative” was about 5,000 years ago, by the Chinese emperor Shennong. I’m almost certain he slipped some coconut oil and a pad of butter in it.  Bulletproof Coffee didn’t come around until the late 90’s when a man named Dave Asprey whipped up the now infamous recipe.  He write’s, “It’s a high-performance drink that has a massive impact on your energy and cognitive function. Bulletproof Coffee has helped everyone from driven CEOs to professional athletes to busy parents increase their energy so they can do more of what fulfills them”.  Fat makes up the building blocks of the drink, and our brains. Together they are a powerful duo that not only taste great…they kick ass together! As we speak, Bulletproof Coffee is changing how we look at optimally fuelling the body and the brain.

Bulletproof coffee is basically using fat as fuel. The caffeine gets encased in the fat from the butter and the coconut oil (or MCT oil) and travels further down the GI tract before getting absorbed. This in-turn gives you a bit longer or stretched out high from your coffee. You also get an incredible feeling of satiety.

I depend on Bulletproof coffee for a lot of things, including boosting my daily energy level, staying lean, and fuelling my workouts and activities. I also use it to avoid spiking insulin and crashing energy levels throughout the day. I use it to improve basic brain cognition and to have quicker and more reliable brain function as well. I apparently need a lot more of it.

I have a BPC regimen that doesn’t stray too crazily from the following menu about six months of the year. I am currently on an intermittent fasting (IF) split of 16/8 (or 20/4). This basically means I do not consume calories for 16-20hrs of the day before eating in a 4-8hr window. I do this Monday through Friday, and then go back to 3-5 high-fat, low-carb meals on the weekend. But this short menu is basically what I use when not doing IF.

Bulletproof Coffee (#1) for breakfast

6 hardboiled eggs for my Mid-morning Snack/meal

Bulletproof Coffee (#2) for lunch

Protein bar (or two) mid afternoon snack

Some form of cruciferous salad (kale, spinach, dandelion and/or arugula),with a healthy portion of protein for dinner

Fistfuls of all unsalted and organic nuts (excluding peanuts & macadamia)

The basic Bulletproof recipe is this:

  1. A large cup (otherwise you will never squeeze all of the goodies into your regular sized coffee cup).
  2. A nice hot brewed cup of quality light roasted coffee (I prefer French press).
  3. It starts out with 2 tablespoons of unsalted Kerrygold butter. The butter should at least be grass-fed if you cannot fuse Kerrygold.  Rid yourself of dairy that is produced using corn-fed, GMO, antibiotics, fertilizers and steroids induced cows and you should feel a difference if you have not done this already.  I also use salted Kerrygold 99% of the time.
  4. MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride) – 2-5 tbsp of an engineered fat that comes from coconut oil. It is designed to be more easily digested than most other fats. As part of a controlled diet, medium-chain triglycerides often induce ketogenic metabolism. Two upgraded versions of MCT oil are also available.  These are known as Brain Octane oil or XTC oil and are both Bulletproof brands. These oils are up to 18x more powerful than coconut oil for even higher enhanced cognitive function.
  5. Finally, you are going to need to blend this concoction in a mixer (or blender). However I rarely blend mine. I just stir mine up and drink it hot. Blending is absolutely necessary if you would like a cold press or cooler type drink.

My personal Bulletproof Coffee recipe for the day contains a host of highly bio-available nutrients.   Some of which include the following ingredients:

  1. One serving of my favorite (sugar-free) Protein powder (I use a  plant-based brand called Orgain). It’s sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten free, soy-free, and GMO-free. It’s the highest quality organic protein I have found to date. The protein itself is derived from brown rice, hemp, pea and chia seed. It’s pretty tasty, and mixes well.
  2. GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) – a heaping tsp of pharma-grade powder.  It is a chief inhibitory neurotransmitter. Its main role is in reducing neuronal excitability. So basically it plays goalie to stress and anxiety. In humans GABA is also directly responsible for the regulation of our muscle tone.  So why not have a bit of that working for me?
  3. Bee Pollen (1-2 tsp) – the only food which contains over 96 nutrients including all known vitamins, from A to K, 28 minerals, 14 fatty acids, all 8 essential amino acids, several special compounds and all 22 known essential nutritional elements.

Well get yourself going Bulletproof and let the fun begin.  Life was rather boring before it came around and I simply cannot wait for you to feel the powerful benefits for yourself!
